The European Commission's Open Source Observatory (OSOR) will hold a two-hour session at the Paris Open Summit dedicated to security and national policies on the use of open source software in public administrations. First, the EC representatives will present the EU-FOSSA initiative that aims to improve the security of the open source software in use in EU institutions and proposes several novelties including bug bounties and hackathons to achieve it. Following the presentation, open source security experts representing private and public sectors will share their experience on the latest trends and challenges around security for open source software.

The second part of the session will begin with the presentation of the ongoing work on the new Commission Open Source Strategy, which will be a starting point for a panel discussion on the main challenges faced by public institutions using open source software. The panel will bring together experts from France, UK, Sweden, and Portugal as well as the EC representatives who will discuss and share the successes and shortcomings of open source policies and strategies from the perspective of different sectors. The discussion, moderated by the OSOR, will aim at bringing out the essential elements of these policies and strategies, and agreeing on a common approach to increase their potential.
