The 8th European Migration Forum will meet for the eight time on 4-5 December, 2023 to discuss migration, asylum and migrant integration. The European Migration Forum is a yearly event co-organised and run by the European Commission and the European Economic and Social Committee. The Bureau is organising a consultation on the topics of the next Forum. A written survey and a meeting will discuss possible themes for the 8th European Migration Forum.

Piloting and validation of innovative solutions for border management is important for the uptake of results of successful research and innovation, and for making sure that innovative solutions and systems can be used for needed capabilities, including respect and promotion of fundamental rights.
On 7 February 2023, the European Commissioner for HOME Affairs Ylva Johansson visited the Port of Antwerp, where she went to see a demonstration by BorderSens, an EU-funded security research project.
CERIS events
As part of the European Council (EUCO) meeting (16 December), EU leaders recalled the importance of addressing all migratory routes. They called on the European Commission and the High Representative of the Union to ensure that the recent action plans for countries of origin and transit are made operational. The European Council recognised the importance of a more unified EU returns policy and called on the Commission and the High Representative, together with Member States, to take swift action to ensure effective returns from the EU to countries of origin. Under the overarching theme “From pandemic to recovery: challenges and best practices in migration management’’, the sixth European Migration Forum (EMF) was held virtually on 27-28 October 2021 by the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) and the European Commission. The forum brought together over 200 representatives from civil society organisations, regional, and local authorities as well as European and international institutions, focusing on migrants’ crucial contributions to the EU’s post-pandemic economic and social recovery. HOME's D5 team working against trafficking in human beings will present the EU picture based on the 2020 progress report of the European Commission in fighting the criminal phenomenon, including areas of concern, latest EU-wide data on victims and traffickers, actions and initiatives and next steps.
