Fifth edition of the Biodiversity Measurement Approaches Guide now available – register for the launch webinar on June 17th
Date: 11/06/2026
Jointly developed by the EU Business & Biodiversity Platform Workstream Finance and Finance for Biodiversity (FfB) Foundation, this guide provides an overview of 13 tools to help financial institutions understand and measure their interactions with biodiversity. The majority of these tools have multiple applications and can be used for different purposes, including supporting investor engagement programs, portfolio management strategies, and other investor decision-making processes.
The Guide presents the suitability of each tool for specific organisational focus areas, business applications, and asset categories, while outlining their respective strengths and limitations. It also provides detailed information on each tool’s data and resource requirements, along with insights into the scopes and pressures covered.
New in edition 5
This edition builds on previous work by updating information across all existing tools, incorporating new case studies. It also introduces one new tool — the Biodiversity Intactness Index (BII) — and expands Chapter 2 with tailored guidance and decision trees for biodiversity impact assessment.
Paragraph 2.2 captures insights from the 2025 workshop series on assessing contributions to positive biodiversity impact, and Chapter 8 on marine environment assessment has been updated to reflect the growing emphasis on this area.
