Updates on Biomethane Mechanism
Date: 15/10/2026
Dear Reader,
The European Commission is launching the first matching round under the Biomethane Mechanism, connecting potential buyers with suppliers of biomethane and the first iteration of the Regulatory Dasboard covering major European markets.
Following months of preparation, we are pleased to share the timeline for this first round.
Timeline:
📅Demand submission phase: from 4 November until 23 December buyers are invited to submit demand requests.
📅Supply submission phase: from 21 January until 4 March 2027 suppliers are invited to submit their supply offers in response to the demand requests.
📅18 March 2027: results of matched demand and supply are communicated to the participants who took part in the round.
Registration:
The round will be open to the registered participants. We encourage you to register on the Biomethane Mechanism by the end of November to avoid any delays in the processing of your file. The early registration completion will help ensure a smooth and timely participation process.
Background:
The Biomethane Mechanism is a key initiative under the EU Energy and Raw Materials Platform designed to support the scale up of biomethane production, trade, and investment across Europe, reinforcing energy security, decarbonisation and industrial competitiveness.
The Mechanism aims to provide visibility for demand and supply, support counterparty discovery and increase regulatory transparency.
It will offer several services, including:
- A matching functionality to facilitate market discovery between buyers and suppliers.
- A regulatory dashboard to help participants understand the conditions for intra-EU transactions
- An investment conditions functionality, available in 2027, to support information exchange between potential investors, regional authorities and network operators.
Updates on Raw Materials Mechanism
First diversification round concluded
The first round under the Raw Materials Mechanism successfully ended on 23 September. In this diversification round, European offtakers could request raw materials for the immediate diversification of their supply chains. This round focused on immediately available rare earths, and strategic raw materials for batteries and defence across all 17 CRMA-listed materials. The results are now available on the Platform to the matched participants.
We are encouraged by the involvement of market participants and the high level of engagement. 85% of offtakers are matched with at least one supplier for one of their submissions, resulting in more than 30 matches for 10 raw materials. Around 45% of the matched companies are SMEs. Commercial negotiations will now take place between the matched participants outside the platform, without the Commission’s involvement.
Next round will be dedicated to projects in development and will be launched before the end of this year. We encourage both demand companies and project developers willing to participate to register already now.
Stay tuned!
Best regards,
EU Energy and Raw Materials Platform Team
