I4-GREEN was a three-year project with partners from ten EU regions and a budget of EUR 4.28 million, including nearly EUR 3 million from the I3 Instrument. The project aimed to strengthen interregional value chains for the green transition in the extractive sector, promoting sustainable and digital solutions that reduce environmental impact, improve resource efficiency, and support circular economy practices.

The project’s two pilots showcased innovative approaches: Iron Holm Oak (Pilot 1) combined rare earth recovery, advanced mineral processing, and renewable energy, while E-LIX (Pilot 2) applied hydrometallurgical processes with bio-based recycled materials for metal recovery and water treatment. Both pilots were technology-ready and validated under real industrial conditions. I4-GREEN supported replication and scaling through technology adaptation, industrialisation, and stakeholder engagement.

The I3 project has significantly enhanced interregional collaboration by connecting innovation actors across Spain, Portugal, and Italy. Through the establishment of two pilot projects, Iron Holm Oak (IHO) in Extremadura and E-LIX in Andalusia, we have facilitated the deployment of green and circular technologies, fostering joint investments and knowledge exchange. The active participation of SMEs from Less Developed Regions has been instrumental in driving innovation and ensuring that the benefits of the green transition are widely distributed.
