Horizon Prizes Blockchain (10/07/2020)

The Prize sought to award a total of 5 million euros to the innovators that come up with the most promising Blockchain solutions in different social innovation areas.

EIC Equity Fund set up (06/07/2020)

The EIC Fund will provide equity from €0.5m to €15m to companies selected for blended finance (grant and equity) under the EIC Accelerator. This is the first time the European Commission, through the European Investment Bank, will make such direct equity investments in companies, with ownership stakes expected to be in general from 10% to 25% in start-ups.

EIC Advisory Board presents Roadmap and Vision for future (06/07/2020)

The independent report recommends key performance indicators of societal impact, economic impact and diversity. While commending the new approaches taken in the current EIC pilot, the Board recommends further improving implementation by drawing lessons from venture capital. The Report recommends shorter and simpler applications, quick feedback and agile decision-making.

On 20 and 21 October 2020, a selection of 15 EIC-funded companies will have the unique chance to learn more about the challenges and the step-by-step process of going public, guided by a team of advisors from Euronext. BotsandUs close funding round of over €5M (10/07/2020)

BotsAndUs, is a London-based startup created by two Romanian engineers. It develops robots that work with people in public spaces like retail stores, shopping centres, airports and office buildings. The idea is to digitise the full customer journey and offer 24/7 customer support. The company just closed a $6 million equity funding round.

Robot panda helps autistic children socialise (10/07/2020)

Plusme is a soft panda robot designed by Pathfinder project IM-TWIN to help children with autism spectrum disorders. Plusme aims to motivate children to interact with a parent or a therapist, during therapeutic activities. It supports the development of basic social skills, like eye contact, joint attention, request of engagement, or social referencing.

Leaf Space raises €3M in private funding (10/07/2020)

As the space sector keeps rapidly expanding, businesses coming up with the best technologies to meet its new requirements are set to thrive. Leaf Space hopes to make the cut with a service-based approach to ground operations for small satellites. The SME supported by the EIC Accelerator raised €3M in a second round of investments in June 2020.

BRAINIAQS uses quantum technology for brain imaging (10/07/2020)

The purpose of the BRAINIAQS project is to set quantum sensing technology in life science innovations, which continuously seek for new techniques of biological imaging allowing precise and non-invasive diagnostics. It will develop and implement arrays of quantum sensors based on superconducting single-photon detectors in a multi-photon microscope.

The European Innovation Council has awarded over €307 million to 64 game-changing ‘green deal’ start-ups and SMEs contributing to the objectives of the European Green Deal Strategy and the Recovery Plan for Europe. Winning proposals range from innovative solutions for the automotive, aerospace and maritime sectors to advanced materials or Internet of Things technologies.

Open Call - EIC ePitching with Procurers: supporting bpost’s green transformation (27/07/2020)

The European Innovation Council is organising an ePitching with Procurers-session together with bpost, Belgium’s national post-provider. This session, taking place on 14 September 2020 at 1 pm CET, will be dedicated to matching EIC-beneficiaries with bpost’s procurement needs in the fields of eMobility and charging infrastructure.

EIC Accelerator grants €166 million to 36 companies fighting coronavirus (10/06/2020)

The EIC Accelerator will award a total €314 million to the 72 innovators selected for support in the form of grants, blended financing and coaching for the March 2020 cut-off of the programme. 36 innovative companies set to combat the coronavirus pandemic will receive €166 million from the EIC Accelerator. In addition, over €148 million will be granted to another 36 companies set to contribute to the recovery plan for Europe. A total of 818 seals of excellence were also awarded to innovative SMEs for their excellent proposals.

EIB, EC and Investitionsbank Berlin inaugurate €70 million malaria fund (10/06/2020)

The EU Malaria Fund is backed by InnovFin EU and the European Fund for Strategic Investments, joint initiatives of the EIB and the European Commission. The fund's first investment amounts to €24.8 million for two companies, whose malaria R&D could potentially lead to secondary use against COVID-19.

#EUvsVirus Matchathon: solutions to coronavirus challenges (08/06/2020)

A world-record of 2235 new partnerships for scaling up 120 innovative projects that tackle coronavirus challenges were sealed on 22-25 May at the #EUvsVirus Matchathon. It brought together 120 winning projects, 800 innovators working in multinational teams, 115 investors and more than 200 other partners, including corporates, universities and public authorities, to help innovators bring their solutions fighting coronavirus faster to the market.

The Future and Emerging Technologies (FET) Innovation LaunchPad call is open! We're looking for projects to transform results from Pathfinder/FET-funded projects into societal or economic innovations. EIC Pathfinder bottom-up call receives 902 applications (10/06/2020)

The EIC received a total of 902 applications from consortia, compiling 5538 participants in total, for the latest EIC Pathfinder bottom-up call, within the 3 June deadline. The applicants request more than €2.8 billion of grant support. With participants from 61 countries from within the EU and abroad, this was the largest ever response to any Pathfinder call.

EIC Prize on Innovative Batteries for eVehicles (10/06/2020)

The €10 million EIC Horizon prize for Innovative Batteries for eVehicles is expecting your applications until 17 December 2020. The challenge is to develop a safe and sustainable battery for electric vehicles through the development of new materials and chemistry making use of abundant, sustainable low cost materials, which are easily available in Europe.

High demand for EIC Green Deal call (08/06/2020)

Over 2000 companies working on sustainable innovations have applied for the EIC Accelerator Green Deal call. Companies from 38 countries sought financial support and 41% of applicants asked for blended finance. The EIC will strive to ensure at least 25% companies led by women are invited to the second-stage of evaluations consisting of interviews, that will take place in mid-July for this cut-off.

Bulgarian Transmetrics AD wins ‘best pitch’ at EIC Investor Day on Mobility (08/06/2020)

Every month the EIC organises an EIC ePitching with Investors around a dedicated topic. On 14 May 2020 the theme was Mobility & Transport. The pitch which brought together seven high-class EIC-backed SMEs with six investors firms. Transmetrics AD, a Bulgarian start-up, took home the prize for ‘best pitch’.

EIC Innovation Training Workshop: connecting researchers to the business world (08/06/2020)

On 13 and 14 May the European Innovation Council hosted the first Innovation Training Workshop for projects funded by the EIC Pathfinder programme. Experts helped 13 participants bring their research into concrete business concepts for example by defining market segments and designing viable products or services.

SMEs pitch at online EIC Corporate Day with BBVA and Ferrovial (08/06/2020)

On 26-27 May, 19 EIC-backed companies and 50 corporates from multinational financial service provider BBVA and infrastructure giant Ferrovial met for an EIC Corporate Day. The fully online event gave corporates and innovators the opportunity to discuss business and innovation opportunities.

Idogen starts trading on Nasdaq First North Growth Market (10/06/2020)

Swedish biotech company Idogen AB is floating on the stock market. The traditional bell ringing was skipped due to coronavirus, but the event was featured on the Nasdaq trading floor at Times Square in New York. Idogen AB develops tolerogenic cell therapies to prevent the patients' immune system from attacking biological agents, transplanted organs or the body’s own cells or tissues.

New generation diagnostics tests to save mothers' and babies' lives (08/06/2020)

MOMM Diagnostics is a Swiss early stage start-up working on Pathfinder Innovation Launchpad project PEDPOC. The project is developing a prototype for a test at the point-of-care, to better diagnose Preeclampsia, one of the most common pregnancy complications that threatens the lives of mother and baby.

Dr. Regina Luttge is an expert in medical microsystems having bio-inspired functionalities. In this interview she explains how her project CONNECT will provide better treatment for neurodegenerative disorders.

Satlantis reaches International Space Station to test its camera (08/06/2020)

After travelling through space for days, EIC Accelerator-funded Satlantis successfully docked to the International Space Station in May. It will spend 3 months there, to test its high-resolution camera for micro-satellites, that will allow them to perform earth observation with a resolution of less than 1 meter.

Additional €150 million for EIC Accelerator call to fund ideas tackling coronavirus (05/05/2020)

The EIC Accelerator will work with an extra €150 million to support game-changing innovations to tackle the coronavirus crisis. The additional budget will fund the best start-ups and SMEs who applied under the March cut-off. A record number of companies applied to the EIC Accelerator pilot March cut-off - many of which have innovations relevant to the coronavirus outbreak.

EIC Work Programme updated (05/05/2020)

The new EIC Work Programme frees more budget for both the EIC Accelerator, for COVID19 related proposals in the March 2020 cut-off, and the Pathfinder Proactive to better align its topics with the EU’s political priorities. The Pathfinder calls will see a stronger emphasis on AI and the creation of a new subtopic on zero-emissions energy storage and conversion technologies for carbon neutrality.

#EUvsVirus Hackathon identifies 117 solutions to support recovery from the COVID-19 outbreak (04/05/2020)

In the next weeks, the EIC will strive to match the demands in terms of financing and resources of the winning solutions, with offers from partners. The winning solutions will be invited to join an EIC COVID Platform – to be launched at the end of May – that will facilitate connections with end users (like hospitals), investors, foundations and other funding opportunities.

Top innovation leaders call for a strong role for the EIC in coronavirus recovery (27/04/2020)

On 27 April 2020, the EIC Advisory Board laid out its Vision Statement for the future of the EIC, especially in the aftermath of COVID-19. The Board advocates directing investments towards game-changing innovations that create a sustainable and human-centric digital future.

With a budget of €196.2 million, the EIC Pathfinder Open has launched a bottom-up call for proposals. Smart Separations wins EIC ePitching on COVID-19 solutions (27/04/2020)

On 15 April 2020, EIC-backed innovators pitched their solutions to fight COVID-19 to a panel of top investors. An overwhelming amount of innovators applied to the dedicated EIC ePitching session, but only seven made the cut. Hugo Macedo won the best pitch with its COVID-blocking micro-filter.

EIC ePitching with Procurers on COVID-19: finding common solutions together (04/05/2020)

On 15 April 2020 the European Innovation Council brought together over 50 public and private procurers, five European corporates and more than 20 EIC-backed SMEs during the first EIC ePitching with Procurers, dedicated to solutions that fight COVID-19. The SMEs had the opportunity to pitch their solutions to the procurers and follow-up with dedicated one-to-one sessions in the afternoon.

COVID-19 and business acceleration events (13/03/2020)

Portable diagnostic device to detect COVID-19 (12/05/2020)

The Pathfinder Open project FREE@POC aims to develop an innovative molecular diagnostic platform to test infectious diseases, like HIV and Influenza. Considering the current exceptional circumstances, the consortium has promptly decided to re-direct research efforts to detect COVID-19 and are looking at opportunities to get a fast-track certification for their portable diagnostic platform.

Isolation pods transport COVID-19 patients safely (04/05/2020)

Epishuttle is a hard-top polycarbonate single isolation pods that allow coronavirus patients to be transported safely. The pods are reusable and provide complete isolation and protection from contagious diseases, without compromising treatment and care to the patient. Demand for Accelerator-funded Epishuttle from EU healthcare systems has increased massively since the COVID-19 outbreak.

Unique drug kills viruses simultaneously (04/05/2020)

NOVIRUSES2BRAIN is a research project, funded by Pathfinder that aims to develop broad spectrum antiviral drugs capable of inactivating different viruses simultaneously. The project is working in particular on viruses transmitted through Aedes mosquitos, like dengue and zika but researchers are now looking to include SARS-CoV-2 in the list of viruses to be addressed by NOVIRUSES2BRAIN.

Chatbot screens COVID-19 symptoms (05/05/2020)

Austrian SME Symptoma is developing an AI-based chatbot to mass screen citizens at risk of COVID-19. The chatbot can remotely screen suspected COVID-19 cases in 36 languages. Accelerator-funded Symptoma aims at helping health authorities worldwide in order to screen the population efficiently as a first-line defence against COVID-19 and any other potentially emerging epidemics.

Forecasting the progression of pandemics (04/05/2020)

Computer-based modelling can help us analyse how pandemics spread and evolve. Two finished EIC Pathfinder projects - EPIWORK and GLEAM - have made models and tools to forecast epidemics. Researchers who worked on these projects are now using their results to try and understand how the COVID-19 pandemic may progress, and how containment and prevention measures may impact what’s to come.

ELECTROMED detects COVID-19 antibodies (08/05/2020)

ELECTROMED is a Pathfinder Open project developing an innovative technology able to detect the interaction between immune receptors and short peptides in a fast, flexible and inexpensive peptide microarray platform. The technology holds a strong potential to fight COVID 19 by detecting if a person has acquired immunity using short peptide targets (epitopes) for SARS-CoV-2 specific antibodies.

Next EIC Accelerator cut-off: €350 M to support Green Deal (12/03/2020)

A proposed update to the European Innovation Council (EIC) Pilot Work Programme, under Horizon 2020 includes €350 million ‘green deal’ calls for game-changing, market-creating innovation contributing to the goals of The European Green Deal and the UN’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. A draft document has been published ahead of the Work Progamme expected to be adopted in late March.

44 Innovative companies selected for EIC Accelerator funding (12/03/2020)

The 44 SMEs will share almost €182 million to develop and scale up their innovations. 21 beneficiaries have been awarded the new so-called “blended finance” support (grant and equity), with an estimated average equity support of €4.61 million per beneficiary. At the same time 63 proposals have been selected for EIC Pathfinder funding.

New opportunity for EIC Programme Manager (12/03/2020)

The European Commission wishes to recruit an additional EIC Programme Manager. He/she is expected to make a major contribution to achieving breakthroughs in strategic clean energy and environmental emerging technologies, in particular through the oversight and support to the management of a portfolio of research and/or innovation projects funded by the EIC. This is a new role, and is expected to be rolled out more extensively in the full implementation of the EIC as of 2021.

EIC Corporate Day with AB InBev (06/03/2020)

On 19-20 February 2020, companies supported under the European Innovation Council (EIC) had the opportunity to accelerate their business collaborating with AB InBev, the world’s leading brewer and one of Europe’s biggest food and drinks companies. AB InBev opened its doors to 32 SMEs to pitch and present their business cases at the group’s Global Innovation and Technology Center (GITEC) in its home city of Leuven, Belgium.

EIC Procurers Day with pharma industry (06/03/2020)

For the first time the European Innovation Council organised an Innovation Procurers Day, together with the German Association for Supply Chain Management, Procurement and Logistics (BME) and its members. During this day nine EIC-backed innovators had the exclusive chance to pitch to innovative procurers from the Pharma industry. The event took place in Dresden, Germany on 4 March 2020 as part of the 5th Pharma Supply Chain Congress (3-5 March 2020).

More funding and special opportunities expected soon for green innovation and woman-led companies (17/02/2020)

A significant increase to the EIC budget is expected in March 2020, to support game-changing, market-creating innovation and deep-tech SMEs scale-up. A one-off EIC Accelerator call for ‘green deal’ start-ups and SMEs is expected for the 19 May 2020 cut-off. Additional opportunities for companies with women CEOs are also expected, to ensure 25% of all finalists in the EIC Accelerator Pilot are women-led companies.

EU Prize for Women Innovators 2020 (19/02/2020)

On 11 February 2020, International Day of Women and Girls in Science, Commissioner Gabriel launched the 7th edition of the EU Prize for Women Innovators. Brexit: implications for the EIC Accelerator (17/02/2020)

As of 1 February 2020, the United Kingdom formally leaves the European Union. Under the Withdrawal Agreement, projects located in the United Kingdom are only eligible for financial operations if those operations were approved before the Agreement's date of entry into force.

EIC-funded Blue Ocean Robotics raises $12 million (17/02/2020)

Unlike most companies in the robotics market, Blue Ocean Robotics focuses on more than one product, with a range of solutions for industries such as healthcare, hospitality, construction and agriculture. In 2019, the value of the Danish company doubled, new acquisitions were introduced in their portfolio and, during the last two months of the year, Blue Ocean has hired nearly one new employee every day. The new funding round will support ongoing growth.

75 Companies selected for EIC Accelerator pilot (06/12/2019)

Seventy-five promising start-ups and SMEs have been selected in the largest funding round so far under the pilot phase of the European Innovation Council (EIC) Accelerator. As a major novelty, 39 of these companies are set to receive both a grant and a direct equity investment. The European Commission will award more than €278 million to the 75 start-ups and SMEs set to shape the future of innovation in Europe.

287 innovators selected for funding under EIC’s SME Instrument Phase 1 (06/12/2019)

A total of 287 small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) form 31 countries have been selected for funding under the last round of the EIC SME Instrument, in the so-called Phase 1 of the programme, now known as the EIC Accelerator. The companies will receive a total amount of €14.15 million to share between their projects to get their innovations faster on the market.

EIC funded companies join L’Oréal at cutting the edge of Cosmetic innovation (06/12/2019)

Twelve European Innovation Council (EIC) pilot funded companies showcased their groundbreaking technologies to L’Oréal in Paris, France on 26-27 November 2019. The innovators took full advantage of partnering with c-level managers. As part of an EIC Corporate Day, offered to companies funded by the EIC, L’Oréal met exclusively EIC funded companies that they had chosen in advance, to pitch their solutions and to benefit from an immediate exchange in one-to-one meetings.

Diabeloop raises €31 million for its diabetes management solution (06/12/2019)

French Diabeloop, has raised €31 million Series B funds for its autonomous diabetes management solutions. The company received funding from the European Innovation Council pilot in 2018 and has reached the biggest Series B round raised by a European company developing therapies that use artificial intelligence. In October 2019, the company also received an InnovEIT prize from EIT Health.

BEACON algorithms offer more individual approach to patients in intensive care (06/12/2019)

Hospital patients who need a ventilator to breathe are about to see artificial intelligence make their treatment more personalised. BEACON Caresystem uses an algorithm to monitor patient’s breath, resulting in more individualised care, shorter stays in the hospital and consequentially higher cost-efficiency. Thanks to European Innovation Council pilot funding, the ventilation system is currently validating its treatment efficiency in hospitals.

108 new innovative EIC projects selected for funding (18/10/2019)

108 innovative projects will get support from the European Innovation Council (EIC) pilot to bring their innovations faster onto the market. The total amount to be distributed to the projects under the EIC Accelerator and the Fast Track to Innovation strands of the EIC pilot is €210.216 million. Each project will receive between €0.5 and €3 million. With this funding and extra business acceleration support, innovative companies will be able to finance their close-to-market innovation activities and get on the market faster.

Virtual e-pitches link chemicals sector companies with top investors (18/10/2019)

On 18 September, six companies in the chemicals industry supported by the European Innovation Council (EIC) pilot, pitched their innovative ideas digitally to a number of investors during the first e-pitching session of the year. The jury members were top investors in the chemical sector: Solvay, DOW, EVONIK and BASF. The SMEs pitching were: Adbiocomposites, Pewas, SilicoLife, Ray Technique, Gr3n Recycling and RadiSurf.

EIC funded urban farming company Infarm raises € 88 million in series B (18/10/2019)

EIC pilot-funded Infarm has raised €88 million from Atomico in a series B funding round. The company makes vertical urban farms where plants are grown efficiently and sustainably, directly at the point of sale. The vertical farms are modulable and contain a whole ecosystem for specific plants (water, temperature and lighting). Thanks to sensors, the performance of the farms are remotely controlled for optimal quality. Infamr received close to €2 million from the European Innovation Council (EIC) pilot and raised €20 million in a series A round from Balderton.

HappyOrNot gets extra 25 million dollars in private investment (18/10/2019)

261 proposals seek funding under Fast Track to Innovation (11/06/2019)

The European Commission received 261 proposals for Fast Track to Innovation (FTI) before the latest cut-off date on 25 May 2019. Proposals include participants from 28 countries, the largest number of proposals being submitted by Spanish, Italian and Dutch applicants. Results are expected for end of summer 2019.

100 EIC SME Instrument companies meet InQbet (11/06/2019)

On 3-4 April, over 100 companies funded by the European Innovation Council (EIC) pilot participated in a matchmaking event at the InQbet Accelerator in Brussels with large corporates and open innovation experts. Hosted by P&G and The Growcery, participants also included representatives from Cargill, Port of Antwerp, Bpost, Nokia, Umicore, ING and Solvay and twenty other big corporations.

Vortex Bladeless & Wavepiston at EUSEW19 (11/06/2019)

2025 SMEs apply for funding under EIC SME Instrument (13/06/2019)

The European Commission received 2025 proposals for the European Innovation Council pilot’s SME Instrument Phase 2 before the last cut-off date of the SME Instrument in this form on 5 June 2019. Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) from 40 countries submitted proposals. Companies that pass the initial selection stage will be invited to Brussels, to pitch in front of a Jury of investors and business experts during the week of 18-21 July 2019.
