“Let’s unleash the power of investment. Let’s build the sustainable, green and equitable world we need”. In his keynote address at this first edition of the EU Sustainable Investment Summit, UN Secretary-General António Guterres delivered this cautionary message: “Our world is in trouble. (…) The disastrous impacts of climate change are more visible by the day. Without decisive action, we are gambling away our last chance to — literally — turn the tide”.

With these words, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen opened the EU Sustainable Investment Summit 2021, the first annual event of the European Commission on sustainable investment following the launch of the European Green Deal.

The special topic in this EBCI takes a look at new questions on economic uncertainty that have been introduced in the Joint Harmonised EU Programme of Business and Consumer Surveys. In light of the COVID-19 shock, the new measures of perceived uncertainty are shown to provide reliable information at an early stage. The Commission will include the new uncertainty indicators in its regular releases of survey results as from October 2021.

The European Commission, on behalf of the EU, has carried out another round of disbursements under the €3 billion macro-financial assistance package for ten enlargement and neighbourhood partners.

At their meeting on 5 October, EU economy and finance ministers discussed the implementation of the Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF) and adopted a Council implementing decision approving the national recovery and resilience plan for Malta.

Meeting on 4 October, euro area finance ministers exchanged views on the macro-economic situation in the euro area.

The European Commission has adopted positive assessments of recovery and resilience plans for Finland and Estonia.

“We have invited you to join us, because of a commitment we took in the European Green Deal and its Investment Plan: On the European side, we have committed to mobilising at least EUR 1 trillion in sustainable investment inside Europe by 2030.”

EU Sustainable Investment Summit: one day to go!
