Looking back: EBSI Milestones
EBSI has had a long run and these have been some of the most defining moments that we’ve had:
2018 The Creation of the EBP: On April 2018, the European Commission launches the European Blockchain Partnership (EBP) to explore blockchain potential for the public sector. The EBP was initially conformed by 21 member states, Norway and Liechtenstein and later it grew to 30 country members plus Ukraine as an observer. 2019 EBSI Kickoff: The EBP publishes a report on the feasibility of a European Blockchain Service Infrastructure.
2020 First EBSI prototype: EBSI is launched, with the development of basic blockchain infrastructure and a user web wallet; during this phase, the use case implementation begins. 2021: Launch of the Early Adopters Programme: The EBSI pilot network is launched, with several public sector organizations becoming early adopters, through the Early Adopters Programme, launched with 21 individual projects. 2022 A ready to use infrastructure: EBSI infrastructure is technically ready to use, and preparations for operations, terms and conditions, operational books, SLAs, and GDPR compliance assessment are made. During this stage, the demo of the first cross-border integrations took place.
2023 EBSI beta: EBSI goes live and scales up, with market stimulation and support and multiple environments for piloting, pre-production, and production. Verifiable Credentials are widely adopted in education, worker mobility, and other domains, on a similar fashion traceability capabilities for digital product passport and IP management, and more, are developed.
2024 Europeum is born: On May 2024 EUROPEUM-EDIC is established to improve the cooperation regarding blockchain and web3 technologies and to use the EBSI infrastructure to deliver EU-wide cross border services, supporting cross-border collaboration among public authorities and promoting innovation and interoperability of decentralised technologies.
2025 A year of milestones: During this year EBSI manage to obtain 2 very significant milestones, first, EBSI released as open source, under the EUPL, fulfilling one of the original mandates upon which EBSI was created. In parallel, the production grade network reached 15 validator nodes, when, in a joint effort with the European Commission, EUROPEUM-EDIC and EBSI-NE, the EBSI Production-Grade network reached the milestone of onboarding 15 Validator Nodes, ensuring the security, resilience and reliability of the blockchain.
