Is a life in professional football compatible with being a climate activist? This is the question Norwegian footballer Morten Thorsby found himself asking early on in his career. Now an Ambassador of the European Climate Pact in Germany, where he plays with FC Union Berlin, he is using his platform to kick-start climate action in football.
We already know that the climate crisis is making heatwaves longer, more frequent and more intense. We all experienced that first hand last summer. In fact the summer temperature in Europe in 2022 was the highest on record.
On 15 May, the European Commission published the Communication on the total number of allowances in circulation (TNAC) in 2022 on the European carbon market. It amounts to 1 134 794 738 allowances.

The Regional Pathways to Climate Resilience (REGILIENCE) project has announced a new strategy for gender mainstreaming and created a working group to guarantee that gender equality and inclusiveness is considered throughout all activities of the project.
Gender plays a key role in resilience building and sustainable development. Vulnerabilities, exposure to risks, and social capacities towards disasters are very much related to gender roles and norms. Understanding these conditions leads to a more inclusive and sustainable climate resilience plan where no one is left behind.
The European Commission’s LIFE Programme 2023 calls for project proposals is still open for innovators looking to receive a share of €611m in funding. Following the adoption of the Horizon Europe 2023-2024 work programme, the European Commission launched new calls to support research and innovation under the EU Mission on Adaptation to Climate Change.
The support is available for projects across a range of different focus areas including climate resilience in agriculture and forestry sectors; protecting critical infrastructure; the impact of climate change on health and more.
The Mission’s Regional Adaptation Support Tool (RAST) is set to launch in June 2023 and will guide regional climate adaptation decision-makers and practitioners through the main steps of the adaptation policy and planning process.
The tool will be based on the adaptation policy cycle, highlighting that climate change adaptation is an iterative process. The RAST will be divided into six steps and for each step, will provide links to helpful key resources for the user.
Earlier this month, MIP4Adapt hosted the online event A Vision for the Community of Practice, which provided attendees with a better understanding of the Community and clarified how they can benefit from it and how they connect with each other.
The event also included a workshop for participants to contribute to building a shared vision for the online EU Mission Adaptation Community.

- Moving from risk assessment to the development of adaptation pathways and how to fund and implement climate adaptation solutions

- Stimulating citizen and stakeholder mobilisation and engagement in establishing transformative pathways towards climate resilience
