Workshop: Open Source Software sustainability at FOSDEM20

OSOR

The European Commission’s Open Source Observatory (OSOR) will be running an Open Source Software (OSS) sustainability workshop at FOSDEM20 conference on Saturday, 1 February 2020!

The European Commission's Open Source Observatory (OSOR) is currently drafting Guidelines on the sustainability of open source communities in the public sector. As open source software (OSS) is increasingly popular in the public administrations, the number of public sector OSS communities has been steadily growing over time.

In collaboration with Dr. Maha Shaikh (King's College London), this workshop will be the opportunity to present the preliminary findings related to the guidelines, including the key success factors associated with healthy communities and to discuss the sustainability of open source communities in the public sector. In particular, the following questions are going to be addressed:

  • How to ensure the long-term success of the community?
  • How to best organise a public sector open source community?
  • What can we learn from previous or ongoing open source projects in the public sector?

You are invited to further brainstorm the key success factors of sustainable OSS communities in groups and identify the key components that the guidelines should contain.
