'EU Open Data Explained': The Publication Office of the EU organises a webinar on 9 November
The Publications Office of the European Union organises a webinar on 9 November. The Translation Centre's IATE tool manager will present the EU-specific terminology database IATE, and the European Commission will showcase its multilingual translation memory Euramis. This webinar will be the first in a series entitled 'EU Open Data Explained'.
The Directorate-General for Translation (DGT) of the European Commission relies on TESTA, a data communication network service supported by ISA², for some of its linguistic IT tools facilitating the task of the translators working in the European institutions.
Translation has always played a major role within the European institutions because it provides the basis for democracy and communication between the EU and its citizens.
The Directorate-General for Translation (DGT) of the European Commission provides the European Commission with high-quality translation and other language services in all 24 official languages of the European Union.
The mission of the DGT is to support the European Union’s multilingual character and to help bring the Union’s policies closer to its citizens, thereby promoting its legitimacy, transparency and efficiency.
Since translation is key to the smooth functioning of the EU, linguistic tools make use of TESTA - such as :
- IATE (Interactive Terminology for Europe), a EU-specific terminology database which centralises the terminology resources of the different EU institutions, enhancing the availability, standardisation and dissemination of the information, and which relies on TESTA for its infrastructure management, and
- Euramis (European advanced multilingual information system), a system of databases or memories that acts as a multilingual, multidirectional repository of clearly labelled equivalent phrases ("segments") from official EU documents allowing their re-use in translation in all European Institutions, and which uses TESTA to provide access for non-Commission EU users.
