Digital single market conference on the free movement of data

The priorities of the Estonian Presidency are actively focused on creating a digital single market within the EU. The digital single market cannot be built without a special emphasis on the free movement of data among member states. The free movement of data provides a visionary framework for accessing, sharing and (re)using data not only between public authorities and private companies but across all member states’ borders.

Thus, with the conference, Estonia takes on the complex challenge of steering and providing a platform for this highly important discussion that will shape the future of the EU.

The free movement of data should be the fifth freedom next to the already established freedoms of European citizens. Data is a powerful enabler of the freedoms of the single market we know today. Apart from lifting barriers, the EU has not yet maximised the growth potential of the data economy.

Estonia’s aim is to establish a single market where digital solutions provide the best possible enablers for creating a favourable environment for entrepreneurship and for the deployment of new technologies in the EU.
