CTS (Clinical Training Services) is a suite of simulation-based Serious Games for Training and e-Learning aimed at medical students. By exploiting computational models of human physiology and drugs, CTS software offers a population of Virtual Patients. Players can improve their understanding of the human menstrual cycle by administering fertility drugs and treatments “in silico” (i.e., through simulation). CTS allows universities to increase teaching quality while decreasing the cost of tutoring and will be offered as a cloud-based service.

 

About the Innovator

MCLab (Model Checking Lab) research team is part of the Computer Science Department of Sapienza University of Rome, which is steadily within top 3% of world Universities (Shangai Ranking). MCLab (http://mclab.di.uniroma1.it) research focuses on design of software tools for model-based verification, validation and design of mission and safety-critical systems such as: Biomedical Devices, Decision Support Systems, Software Based Control Systems in general.

What is the innovation

Within the EU-funded PAEON project, MCLab has developed CTS (Clinical Training Services), a suite of simulation-based Serious Games for Training and e-Learning aimed at medical, biology or bioengineering students. Through computational models of human physiology (Virtual Physiological Human) and pharmaco-kinetics/dynamics, CTS software offers a population of Virtual Patients. Players can improve and test their knowledge of the physiology of the human menstrual cycle by administering fertility drugs and treatments “in silico” (i.e., through simulation). Currently, CTS TRL is about 5.

Out of the lab – Into the Market

We have started a collaboration with Sapienza Medical school to test CTS with University students. This will allow us to test CTS in an operational environment and bring it to TRL 9 and then to the market. CTS will allow universities to increase teaching quality while decreasing the cost of tutoring. We plan to exploit CTS by creating in 2018 a spin-off from MCLab and offer CTS as a cloud based service to Universities.

Benefits of participation in the Framework Programme

MCLab research focuses on software tools for automatic analysis of computational models. MCLab software tools supporting precision medicine or qualification of biomedical devices or drugs (in silico clinical trials) are then built resting on computational models for human physiology, and pharmaco-kinetics/dynamics. Accordingly, building such models requires a multidisciplinary team.
