About the innovator

The Enterprise Information Systems department at the Fraunhofer Institute for Intelligent Analysis and Information Systems IAIS applies semantic web and linked data technology to generating value out of structured and unstructured data that originates from heterogeneous sources. We empower industry as well as the public sector towards digitisation.

What is the innovation

The OpenBudgets.eu project has developed an integrated software-as-a-service platform where public administrations can upload public budget and spending data, which citizens, journalists as well as the administrations can then visualise and analyse. Fraunhofer IAIS focused on the overall platform infrastructure and integration, introducing a common semantic information model to facilitate interoperability of the different components integrated.

Out of the lab. Into the market

The innovation has been developed by the H2020 OpenBudgets.eu project partners (Civio, Fraunhofer IAIS, J++, OKFDE, OKFGR, OKI, TIEU, UEP, UniBonn - full list at OpenBudgets.eu). Each partner, jointly with Fraunhofer IAIS or individually, is exploring the potential of public administrations to improve their information services and to gain a better overview of their budgets via user-friendly publishing and analysis tools. Examples of successful transfer to market have been achieved by Fraunhofer IAIS and OKFGR who are currently working on extended pilot projects with the cities of Bonn and Thessaloniki respectively. These trials provided solid understanding of the requirements for operating the OpenBudgets.eu platform in production settings, so that it can be used directly by citizens and municipalities.

Benefits of participation in the Framework Programme

Participation in an H2020 funded project has improved our connections to capable partners required to apply and evaluate smart data technology for improving government services at a large scale, and has provided us with the budget initially required to enable public administrations to evaluate our developments.
This innovation was funded via H2020 project OpenBudgets.eu
