Reactable Systems, as a partner in the EU-finded GIANTSTEPS project, has developed musical expert agents based on the latest findings in Music Information Research (MIR) and Machine Learning (ML), for boosting the musical creativity of novice users that lack technical or musical knowledge, as well as for enhancing the inspiration and increasing the productivity of professional music producers. We are including these software helpers for harmony, melody or rhythm in affordable music production tools for mobile devices.

What is the innovation

Reactable's ROTOR

We developed several AI-based music expert agents for helping musicians that lack theoretical musical knowledge, as well as for inspiring and boosting the creativity and productivity of professional ones. One of these agents, the "Automatic Tonalizer", helps musicians work with the harmonic information present in their compositions. It automatically determines the music key of any soundfile, adapting other files to follow that key. We also developed a tangible controller interface for mobile devices to extend the possibilities of 2D screens.

Out of the lab – Into the Market

The “Automatic Tonalizer” and the physical controllers for capacitive screens have been integrated in our iOS application ROTOR, currently in the market reaching more than 10K users. These innovative features have been praised by reviewers and users. Steps is a MIDI sequencer app that allows to create complex rhythmic patterns in surprising new ways, and the first to include a Rhythm Expert Agent. Other expert agents also developed during the project, are going to be released in the next months.

Benefits of participation in the Framework Programme

Being within the EU FET project GiantSteps not only enabled us to have access to state-of-the-art algorithms and being in close contact with leading research institutions to develop the above-mentioned tools, but it also helped in re-establishing ourselves as a company that provides new ways of creating and performing electronic music by incorporating "musical knowledge".
