About the innovator

NIT is a private SME allocated near Madrid (Spain), which develops and commercializes industrial solutions for real-time monitoring and smart control of laser-based industrial processes. These solutions are based in self-produced infrared cameras, manufactured with a unique technology, and sensitive in the medium wavelength infrared (MWIR, 1-5 microns), high-speed capabilities and uncooled operation at room temperature. The research team of NIT includes senior scientists and engineers with a broad experience in the infrared market and solution development.

What is the innovation

NIT has developed during MASHES two solutions based in uncooled high-speed infrared cameras, allowing inline monitoring of laser welding processes, and real-time control of the laser power during LMD and cladding processes. These systems are capable, in real time, to identify and classify defects in the manufactured part, and control some of the critical parameters of the process. MASHES demonstrated of the advantages that NIT’s technology offers compared to other vision technologies as CMOS sensors.

Out of the lab. Into the market

Two solutions have been successfully brought into the market: 1) I3LasWeld, for real-time detection and classification of defects during laser welding processes, and 2) CLAMIR,  the first commercial system based in infrared imaging to control in real-time the laser power during LMD (AM) and cladding processes, by analysing the melt pool dynamics. Both solutions fulfil the requirements of the Industry 4.0 and bring the user closer to a “zero defect” manufacturing. Current customers are spread worldwide, including Japan and Germany.

Benefits of participation in the Framework Programme

MASHES helped NIT to explore and demonstrate the applicability of its innovative infrared technology in a new field of application, bringing excellent prospective of business. The technical achievements reached during  MASHES have been of vital importance for the company. MASHES has contributed to introduce NIT unique technology to key players in the EU in the laser-based processing industry and has allowed to launch two successful commercial products: I3LasWeld and CLAMIR which have already been sold in several countries.

This innovation was funded via H2020 project Mashes.
