The European Commission has authorised the marketing of house crickets (Acheta domesticus) as a novel food for the EU following a detailed assessment by the European Food Safety Agency.
The Farm to Fork Strategy identifies insects as an alternative protein source that could facilitate the shift towards a more sustainable food system. House crickets become the third insect authorised as a food ingredient for the EU market and they will be available in either frozen, dried or powder form. A dedicated Q&A webpage can tell you more about this safe new source of novel food protein.
