A European Parliament resolution adopted last month is seeking legislative proposals for binding measures and targets that tackle adverse impacts on health and climate from methane.
Agriculture is among the priority areas considered by MEPs for mitigating methane-related concerns. This is because farm-based sources contribute a high proportion of anthropogenic methane emission in the EU. Livestock, particularly ruminants, are seen by the Parliament to offer the second-highest overall methane-emission reduction potential. Energy and waste sectors are also recognised by the MEPs’ resolution for their ability to moderate methane emissions.
