Viva Europa 2010

Viva Europa 2010

Enjoying opera has been the privilege of the wealthy, since its birth at the end of the 16th century. But this summer, a European cultural event, Viva Europa 2010, will break this pattern for the second time and give the biggest possible number of European citizens the opportunity of enjoying opera free of charge.

On the 18th of June 2010, citizens from all over Europe will meet Carmen, the beautiful and seductive gypsy woman on large screens. George Bizet’s opera will be shown simultaneously in public places in around 40 European cities.

The event intends to federate a feeling of belonging and to create a common European experience by sharing a form of art that finds its roots in traditional European classical music. It also aims to give visibility to the fight against poverty and social exclusion in times of social and economic difficulties.

People experiencing poverty have very limited access to culture, which limits their ability to overcome social exclusion and move back into society.

Viva Europa 2010 aims to stop this vicious circle, at least for one evening, and raise awareness as to the effects of social exclusion. On 18 June we will give a particular example of what Europeans can share together.

The project will give visibility to the city and region of Valencia and to the other European cities where the opera will be broadcasted through video and audio references.

Supermodel and actress Tasha de Vasconcelos, campaign ambassador for the European Year for Combating Poverty and Social Exclusion will attend the event. The opera will be broadcasted from the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía in Valencia, Spain at 20h on the 18th of June.
