2010 European Year Opening Conference Report

The opening conference of the 2010 European Year for COmbating Poverty and Social Exclusion was held in Madrid on 21 January 2010. The conference report is now available.

The report summarises the key outcomes of the conference, and the five priorities which emerged from the debates:

  • Placing the fight against poverty at the top of the European agenda
  • Combating inequalities, investing in social protection and promoting solidarity, priorities for the Spanish Presidency
  • Creating stronger European instruments and setting quantitative objectives for those currently in use
  • Active inclusion based on three pillars, adequate income support, inclusive labour markets and access to quality services, must be central to policies aimed at fighting exclusion
  • Political commitments must result in specific priorities and actions targeted at those most vulnerable
