European citizens consider that poverty has increased at local, national and EU level in 2009.

The Flash Eurobarometer survey – “Monitoring the social impact of the crisis: public perceptions in the European Union (Wave 2)”  aims to investigate perceptions about the existence of poverty, gain knowledge about the degree of financial difficulty of households, measure changes in healthcare and social-care affordability in the past six months, understand how people feel about their future pension entitlements and their concerns about their financial situation in their old age.

In addition, the survey looked at the perceptions of EU citizens in the near future (in the following 12 months). More precisely it covered the following issues:

  • General expectations about households’ financial situation
  • Perceptions about the risk of falling behind with various payments
  • The ability to afford one’s current accommodation
  • The likelihood of keeping one’s job
