Discrimination is a main cause of poverty. The European Social Fund supports actions to combat discrimination in recruitment and employment.
Mothers, older people, immigrants or ethnic minorities are examples of groups of people who suffer from discrimination in the labour market - in getting a job, in keeping a job, and in progressing in a job.
There are two reasons for fighting discrimination in access to, and within the labour market. The first is social: discrimination on such grounds is against European values and EU law. The second is economic: faced with an ageing working population the EU needs to bring more people into employment in order to ensure future growth and prosperity.
