Germany: Discussing enlargement with Minister Westerwelle
Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighbourhood Policy, Štefan Füle, met with the German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle in Berlin today to discuss the enlargement process of the European Union and to exchange views in the light of the December European Council. "The key priority for us is to maintain the credibility of the accession process and to strengthen it by making sure that the aspirant countries deliver on the necessary criteria and commitments" Commissioner Füle said. He explained the Commission´s assessment of the progress of the countries of the Western Balkans in the accession process including the recommendations the Commission made in its Enlargement Strategy last month. Commissioner Füle stressed his determination to continue the close cooperation and discussions with the Member States on maintaining the momentum of the enlargement process as one of the most successful EU policies and the main driver of reforms in the countries in the accession process.
