Commissioner Damanaki speaks at the Meeting of the "Europe Direct" Information Network

Commissioner Maria Damanaki addressed the representatives of the "Europe Direct" Information Network in Greece. Europe Direct is a network of accessible, local information centres in all member states, created by the European Commission. The mission of the network is to distribute information and advice about the European Union’s policies, actively promote local and regional debate about the European Union, allow the European institutions to disseminate local and regional information and give the public the opportunity to send feedback to the European Union institutions.

Europe in the Global Maritime Economy

Commissioner Maria Damanaki was in Paris to participate in the first edition of the French maritime event Euromaritime. Commissioner Damanaki spoke of the importance of Europe in the Global Maritime Economy and updated stakeholders on progress made and developments foreseen in the five key areas set out in the Commisson's Blue Growth strategy for the maritime economy of Europe, adopted in September 2012. Euromaritime, a marine and maritime economy event, showcases 180 exhibitors in an area of 6,000m2. Euromaritime has received the patronage of the European Commission.

Speech before the Committee of EU Affairs of the Greek Parliament

Commissioner Maria Damanaki was in Athens to speak before the Committee of European Affairs of the Greek Parliament. The Commissioner presented and dicussed with the Committee, inter alia, the Working Programme of the European Commission for 2013 as well as the progress on the reform of Common Fisheries Policy and Integrated Maritime Policy.

Closing in on Illegal fishing

Commissioner Maria Damanaki is in London to participate as key speaker in the 8th International Forum on Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) Fishing, organised by the Royal Institute of International Affairs. The Commissioner presented the latest achievements of the EU in tackling illegal fishing. At the conference, Commissioner Damanaki also discussed bilaterally with Mr Richard Benyon, Parliamentary Under-Secretary for Natural Environment and Fisheries, and Dr Jane Lubchenko, US Under Secretary of Commerce for Oceans and Atmosphere. Discussions focussed on the benefits of the close EU-USA co-operation so far against IUU fishing as well as on new areas of co-operation. These include cooperation on RFMOs (Regional Fisheries Management Organisations), Integrated Maritime Policy and the EU Atlantic strategy across the ocean especially in the areas of research, observation and mapping.
