Commissioner Cioloş attended the German Farmers Congress

Commissioner Dacian Cioloș visited Berlin on July 1 & 2 and attended the Deutscher Bauerntag (German Farmers Congress). In his keynote speech to the farmers, the Commissioner underlined the importance of the public goods that farmers already provide which cannot be rewarded by the market.

He defended a strong budget at the level of the challenges we face and that support must be distributed in a way that is easily understood by the taxpayer. He also referred to the importance in future of addressing situations of excessive price volatility, suggesting that member states should dispose of a tool box of commonly agreed mechanisms that are helpful in addressing the problems without distorting competition. He also underlined the importance of innovation, floating the idea that there could be Rural Development schemes to encourage swifter shift of new methods and technologies from the laboratory to the field.

On the Thursday evening, the Commissioner attended an outdoor cocktail reception hosted by the German Farmers Association DBV before leaving for a dinner with Minister Ilse Aigner.
