Treatment, coverage & costs

Doctors

• You can consult any doctor registered with the Swiss health insurance scheme.
• Usually, you have to pay the full cost of treatment and claim a refund later (see reimbursement).

Dentists

• Your EHIC does not cover dental treatment except in case of an accident, a serious disease of the masticatory system or any other serious illness according to Swiss law.

Hospital treatment

• In an emergency, go to the emergency department of any public hospital.
• For non-urgent treatment, you will need to be referred to a public hospital by a doctor.
• If you are admitted to hospital, the invoice will be sent to the Gemeinsame Einrichtung KVG.
• The Gemeinsame Einrichtung KVG pays for the costs for medical treatment in a public hospital ward.
• If you choose to stay in a private hospital or in a semi-private or private ward of a public hospital, you will have to pay the difference.

Prescriptions

• Prescription medicines are reimbursable, if they appear on the official lists of covered medicines.

Ambulance

• The healthcare system pays up to 50% of the cost – up to CHF 500 per calendar year. You will need to pay the rest yourself.
• The remaining costs are non-refundable in Switzerland

Air ambulance and emergency rescue

• The healthcare system pays 50% of the cost of emergency rescue – up to CHF 5000 per calendar year. You will need to pay the rest yourself.
• The remaining costs are non-refundable in Switzerland.

Reimbursement

• If you have to pay for care, you can send the original bill, a copy of your EHIC and your identity card to

• Include your bank details (IBAN, BIC, address) for a quick and cost-free transfer.
• If you were unable to make a claim during your stay, contact your national health insurance provider when you get home.

Patient contribution

• You will have to pay a standard fee for each 30-day period of treatment (currently CHF 92 for adults and CHF 33 for those aged 18 and under).
• In case of in-patient stay, an additional daily contribution of CHF 15 is charged for adults. Those under 18 years old, young students (up to the age of 25) and women receiving maternity services are exempt from the hospital contribution.

Loss of card

• Your health insurer (KVG) will issue a provisional replacement certificate.

• In urgent cases, the provisional replacement certificate can be sent to you by fax or e-mail in the country where you are staying.
