Public employment services

In EU countries, public employment services (PESs) are the authorities that connect jobseekers with employers. Although structured differently in each country, all PESs help match supply and demand on the labour market through information, placement and active support services at local, national and European level.

European network

The European network of Public Employment Services cover all 27 EU countries, plus Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Switzerland. Chaired by the European Commission, it aims to:

• optimise members' input into the European Employment Strategy and the corresponding national labour market policies
• improve service delivery  through mutual learning, peer review and analysis papers (PES-to-PES dialogue) and through detailed discussions in working groups and high-level meetings and conferences
• contribute to discussions between policy makers and implementers at European level, publishing policy papers on specific issues such as flexicurity and new skills for new jobs
