Picture It! UN Women and European Commission launch comic competition on gender equality

19-02-2015

UN Women and the European Commission, together with the Belgian Development Cooperation and UNRIC, are today launching a Comic and Cartoon Competition on Gender Equalitypdf(400 kB). The Competition is part of the UN Women campaign “Empowering Women – Empowering Humanity: Picture It!” celebrating the 20th anniversary of the historic Fourth World Conference on Women that took place in Beijing in 1995.

Affirmed by 189 countries, the outcome of the Conference, the Beijing Platform for Action, considered to be the most comprehensive blueprint on women’s rights, calls upon governments to ensure equality and non-discrimination under the law and in practice. It imagines a world where each woman and girl can exercise her freedoms and choices, and realise all her rights, such as a life free from violence, to go to school, to participate in decisions and to earn equal pay for equal work. Twenty years on, the Beijing promise is only partially fulfilled, and social justice inaccessible to too many women.

The 20th anniversary of Beijing opens new opportunities to galvanise political will, reconnect, regenerate, and mobilise the public. The competition calls upon young people in the European Union to depict the messages of the 12 Critical Areas of Concern of the Beijing Platform, and invites them to reflect on women’s rights and empowerment and on the relationship between women and men.

Comic and cartoon artists and art students, aged 18 to 28 years old, who are residents of an EU Member State, are invited to join the competition with their drawings. Among the submissions five finalists will be recognised. These finalists will be invited to Brussels to the Competition Awards Ceremony in summer 2015.

The submission deadline for the competition is 20 April 2015.
