DS Exp stats > services trade by mode of supply EN REVAMP

Why are these statistics needed?

Comprehensive information on trade in services by mode of supply (MoS) has been a longstanding priority for trade negotiations. The detailed international supply of services (ISS) statistics, which are available by services category, mode of supply, and partner country, help policymakers to support the ongoing and future trade negotiating agenda with strong facts and evidence-based arguments.

In this respect, the statistics by MoS monitor the impact of services trade agreements, as they show how and where services are supplied internationally.

Why are they experimental?

Although statistics on services by MoS are important for the users, there is a scarcity of relevant data. Eurostat in cooperation with the WTO have developed a simplified model to estimate the international supply of services by MoS.

How are they produced?

Exports and imports of services supplied by mode are currently calculated using a modelling approach combining ITSS with statistics from foreign affiliates (FATS).

An overview on the methodology is provided in the article  Services trade statistics by modes of supply (see the methodology section). The complete methodology is presented in the Eurostat modes of supply compilers guide.

Feedback

To help Eurostat improve these experimental statistics, users and researchers are kindly invited to give us their feedback by email:

  • How useful do you consider the MoS data and the published analysis?
  • What do you need the MoS data for?
  • Would you have any comments or suggestions for improving the pilot methodology?
  • What sort of analysis based on services trade statistics by modes of supply would bring added value in your field?
