Why are these statistics needed?

The EU's political agenda has focused on jobs and growth for many years. In the EU at micro level, high-growth enterprises (HGEs) – businesses that record average annualised growth of 10% or more over a three-year period – help:

  • create jobs
  • boost economic growth

However, micro HGEs (1 to 9 employees) are currently not covered by regular annual data collection. This means a significant number of businesses in the EU are not covered by HGE statistics.

Why are they experimental?

The areas covered by the new statistics, i.e. the role and economic importance of micro HGEs as well as the sustainability of growth after the high-growth period, are based on a new methodology developed and tested within the project. More importantly, this methodology, as far as possible, builds on the existing HGE methodology.

How are they produced?

In principle, the methodology applied follows that of the OECD-Eurostat manual on Business Demography, particularly the relevant parts dealing with HGEs. Therefore, it should be possible to use the harmonised methodology to compare and benchmark the results of the standard HGE data with the new micro HGE data.
