About the European Transparency Initiative

For any public institution, transparency goes hand in hand with legitimacy. Political decision-makers are ultimately accountable to the public, so they must be open to public scrutiny. Citizens have a right to know how their taxes are being spent and how the power entrusted to political bodies is handled. Good governance demands nothing less. That is why the Barroso Commission identified transparency as one of its strategic objectives.

The European Transparency Initiative (or ETI) is one of the ways the Commission seeks to further strengthen public trust in the EU Institutions through increased openness and accessibility. Launched in 2005, the European Transparency Initiative is a package with four main components:
