European Ombudsman
The EU Ombudsman works to promote a service culture within the EU – objectives I share along with the whole Commission.
The Commission supported changes in 2008 to modernize and streamline the way the Ombudsman works, particularly in areas such as:
- access to EU documents
- testimonies by EU officials
- cooperation on human rights
- the role of the European Antifraud Office, (OLAF)
Thanks to the Commission’s efforts to improve its administration, the number of complaints to the Ombudsman has fallen markedly from high levels in 2004 and 2005. One of my priorities has been to further improve the working relationship between the Commission and the Ombudsman.
