The EU Council of Ministers gave a green light to the legislation that will create "EU Aid Volunteers" - an initiative that will give citizens the opportunity to make a personal impact in humanitarian work.
The programme will offer close to 20 000 opportunities for volunteering, including deployment worldwide during the next seven years. It will be open for a variety of profiles, from newcomers to experienced humanitarian experts. Volunteers will be trained and matched with humanitarian organisations for deployment in EU-funded projects in countries affected by disasters.
The coming months will see the preparation of the scheme such as the training programme, the certification process, the capacity-building and technical assistance for the future sending and hosting organisations.
The first opportunities to select, train and deploy volunteers are expected in 2015.
