World Humanitarian Day 2014: Humanitarians are at risk!

Commissioner Kristalina Georgieva pays tribute to the people who risk their lives everyday as their work continues to grow more dangerous. The nature of conflict is changing and over 51 million people were forced to flee in 2013. At the same time, 454 humanitarians were killed, kidnapped or injured in the same year.
This World Humanitarian Day, join with the European Union as it honours the work humanitarians are undertaking to help those in need in an ever more riskier environment.

Commissioner Georgieva addressed the press room on new humanitarian funding for Iraq and Ukraine. She also reminded journalists of the fragile world we are currently living in, experiencing three level 3 humanitarian crises and an international health crisis in the Ebola outbreak.

Commissioner Georgieva addresses press room on Iraq and Ukraine

Commissioner Georgieva attended the European Commission's midday press briefing to personally announce new funding for Iraq and Ukraine.
The latest fundings come after a series of humanitarian developments including the international health crisis in the the Ebola outbreak. The announcements also came one week before World Humanitarian Day, a time the world pays tribute to the work of humanitarians in an ever more dangerous job.
Commissioner Georgieva reiterated that humanitarian assistance provided by anyone should respect humanitarian principles: neutrality, independence, impartiality.

Commissioner Georgieva attends signing of Austria to EU Children of Peace initiative

Commissioner Kristlina Georgieva and Commissioner Johannes Hahn attended the official signing ceremony where Austria committed €250 000 to support the EU Children of Peace initiative.
Also attending the ceremony was Austrian Foreign Minister Sebastian Kurz with whom Commissioner Georgieva explained how the funding would help children in conflict.
The EU Children of Peace initiative has helped over 100 000 children around the world who have fled or face conflict everyday but have no access to school.

Commissioner Georgieva attends International donors' conference for floods in the Balkans

Commissioner Georgieva spoke at the International Donors Conference for Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina following devastating floods in May.
The Union Civil Protection Mechanism, coordinated by EU Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection (ECHO), was activated during the floods and the Commissioner explained, with panellists such as Štefan Füle, how the EU could help in the aftermath.
The conference was attended by many high level dignitaries including French Foreign Minister, Laurent Fabius, UNDP Head, Helen Clark and Alenka Bratušek, Slovenian Prime Minister.

Commissioner Georgieva is in New York at the UNOCHA organised humanitarian affairs debate at the UN's annual Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).
The Commissioner will address the security situation in the Central African Republic which needs continuing humanitarian assistance.
