The European Commission has published a study on the existing national legal protection in the EU Member States against parasitic copying - the practice of marketing products which are designed to look like pre-existing products of well established brands. The Commission also published a study on the legal protection of trade secrets.

Internal Market and Services Commissioner Barnier said: "Know-how is the basis for the competitiveness of European businesses. European companies should be confident in their innovation effort and should be assured that it is safe to exploit valuable knowledge across the borders of the Single Market. Without such protection, there is a risk that investment in research and innovation in the Single Market will be undermined".
