Greece: Launch of the Just Transition Fund in Megalopolis

Tomorrow, the Just Transition Development Programme (first pillar of the Just Transition Mechanism) will be officially launched in Tripolis (Greece) with the participation of alternate Minister of Development and Investments Mr Papathanasis, and the presence of Secretary-General for Public Investment Mr Skalkos, the Regional Governor of Peloponnese Mr Nikas and the representative from the European Commission Mr  Rasmussen.

This will be the second official launch event following the one in Western Macedonia in January 2023 and aims to present to the local community information about the opportunities offered through the Just Transition Development Programme.

On the eve of the event, a meeting will be held with the municipalities of the Territorial Plan, which will allow for all authorities concerned to share their visions for the initiative. In the coming years Megalopolis and the Municipalities of Gortynia, Oichalia and Tripoli will benefit from an allocated EUR 391 million of funding from the Just Transition Fund, with a view to support SMEs and boost the economic diversification in the context of the exit from fossil fuel extraction and power production. One of the first examples of such investments is the funding of the ‘Bioeconomy 360° Hub' in the area, an investment which aims at transforming and developing business activity across the full range of the bio-economy value chain (Agri-food, circular and digital economy).

The event can be followed via this livestream from 10:00.

Background

The JTF supports the territories most affected by the transition towards a climate-neutral economy. These territories are identified in Territorial Just Transition Plans (TJTPs) following a dialogue with the Commission in the framework of the negotiations of the 2021-2027 Partnership Agreements and the associated programmes. The  1.63 billion Just Transition Fund programme for Greece was adopted on 16 June 2022.
