Just Transition Platform Conference kicks-off in Brussels to discuss the impact of the Just Transition Fund in the EU regions

Tomorrow, the 9th edition of the Just Transition Platform Conference kicks-off in Brussels. Organised by the Commission, the two-day event will gather more than 1,000 participants from EU regions benefitting from the Just Transition Fund (JTF), to discuss progress on the ground and to share best practices that have demonstrated their added value in the 96 just transition regions identified across the EU.

Discussions will look at progress made with concrete examples of JTF-funded projects and will look ahead to the future of the just transition and how regions can maximise available EU funding. Specific sessions will focus on youth engagement in the just transition, the creation of energy communities, and ways to enhance workers’ skills for a green future.

On Tuesday, Commissioner for Cohesion and Reforms Elisa Ferreira and Commissioner for Energy Kadri Simson will inaugurate the Conference, following which Commissioner Ferreira will discuss with stakeholders from different regions achievements so far and state-of-play with implementation. Commissioner Simson, who will participate via a pre-recorded video, will stress the importance of citizen engagement for renewable energy deployment across the EU.

On Wednesday, Commissioner for Jobs and Social Rights Nicolas Schmit will close the conference and will highlight the importance of developing workers’ skills to reap the benefits of the green transition.

The Commission set up the Just Transition Platform in 2020 to accelerate the sharing of information and to provide stakeholders with technical support and to help them understand the support available under the Just Transition Mechanism (JTM), including the Just Transition Fund (JTF).

For the regions most affected by the transition towards climate neutrality, the JTF and the JTM are key tools to reduce regional inequalities on the ground, in line with the EU Cohesion Policy’s overall aim of addressing structural changes across the EU.  The JTF provides €19.2 billion to these regions as they make the green transition. Together with the other components available under the JTM, the aim is to mobilise up to €55 billion to support the just transition regions.
