EU co-funded Digital Learning Campus revolutionises education in Schleswig-Holstein

Today, Schleswig-Holstein witnessed a ground-breaking transformation in education with the inauguration of its new Digital Learning Campus (DLC). This innovative initiative, one of Schleswig-Holstein’s Operations of Strategic Importance (OSI), brings together 12 universities with interdisciplinary consortia from various sectors, marking a significant leap towards the future of learning.

The DLC, managed by the Schleswig-Holstein Ministry of Education, Vocational Training, Science, Research and Culture, is a EUR 38 million project, supported by 40% funding from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF). The project aims to redefine education under the theme "Future Skills for Schleswig-Holstein," creating a new educational ecosystem accessible to all citizens in the region.

“The Digital Learning Campus thrives on networking. It is a flagship for new forms of learning, new forms of collaboration, new forms of innovation and new forms of networking between business, science, and society.  I personally am very impressed by the DLC concept because it works consistently across both the educational and the industrial sectors.”,” said Karin Prien, Minister of General Education and Vocational Training, Science, Research and Culture of the Land of Schleswig-Holstein.

Multi-modular approach to education

The heart of the DLC is its digital learning and collaboration platform, complemented by physical learning locations in Heide, Flensburg, Kiel, and Lübeck, focusing on future-oriented topics and technologies. The DLC platform offers free and barrier-free access to learners, including pupils, students, company employees, and citizens interested in exploring cutting-edge topics such as artificial intelligence.

The DLC's impact extends across sectors, offering unique opportunities for companies, universities, and schools. Companies can actively engage as associate partners or sponsors, while entrepreneurs can qualify as DLC trainers, fostering direct connections with potential employees, students, or pupils. Universities can seamlessly integrate DLC offerings into curricula, enhancing students' future skills and employability. The DLC has also been classified as an extracurricular learning location for schools, providing flexibility and addressing current skills needs.

Launch at inauguration event

The DLC is more than just a platform; it represents a collaborative effort to address global challenges using digital technologies sensibly. The DLC was officially introduced at a grand inauguration ceremony at the Kiel Science Centre on 6 March 2024.

The inauguration event, featuring approximately 120 on-site participants and unlimited virtual attendees via YouTube live streaming, showcased the DLC's vision and offerings. The English-speaking part of the event included greetings from Karin Prien, Schleswig-Holstein Minister of Education, and a keynote by Sabine Bendiek, former head of German multinational software company SAP AG and ex-CEO of Microsoft Germany.

The inauguration event's programme included engaging sessions, presentations on DLC learning venues, and a World Café in German. The event was recorded and is available on the DLC portal and the Ministry’s YouTube channel, contributing to the wider dissemination of DLC's mission and achievements.
