The Regiostars are Europe’s award to EU-funded projects which demonstrate excellence and new approaches in regional development. The European Commission started the Regiostars Award in 2008. With the goal of inspiring other regions and project managers across Europe, participating projects are in the spotlight of communication activities at European level. Five categories and a public choice award are up for grab every year.
Every year, the European Commission awards those EU-funded projects, which demonstrate excellence and new approaches in regional development. With the goal of inspiring other regions and project managers across Europe, participating projects are in the spotlight of communication activities at European level.
The REGIOSTARS are awarded to projects in five thematic categories (smart, sustainable and inclusive growth, urban development and a topic of the year).
In 2020, the REGIOSTARS are focussed on five areas that are crucial for the future of EU regional policy:
High-level academics will assess the submitted project applications and crown the winners.
In addition, the public will decide on its own winner through a public on-line vote and award the Public choice award to one of the projects.
More details on the award categories:
The Guide for Applicants provides you with all the necessary information to make your project a winner. Next to the detailed description of this year’s award categories, the eligibility and award criteria, this Guide contains a practical handbook to guide your through the process.
The on-line application platform is open from 2 March until 9 May 2020.
The winners in the five categories, and the winner of the public choice, will receive their well-deserved price at the festive REGIOSTARS ceremony, to take place in Brussels in October 2020.

ESA BIC Portugal (PT)
A project based in Portugal’s Centro region has helped entrepreneurs and SMEs generate new business and innovation by supporting their access to and use of space technologies and satellite data. High-tech space-bound solutions are being used to create new products and services in sectors such as transport and logistics, healthcare, agriculture and the environment. In its first five years of operation, the ESA-BIC Portugal project helped to generate more than EUR 11.5 million in sales and turnover, while creating 30 start-ups and around 100 highly skilled jobs.
Take the Cool Food challenge (FR-UK)
Food accounts for nearly a fifth of our individual carbon footprints. Although this can be lowered, doing so requires individuals to adopt more sustainable food choices – choices that most people simply don’t know about. But thanks to the Cool Food Challenge, an EU-funded initiative between the UK and France, there’s a fun, interactive way to make smart, sustainable food choices.
E-SCHOOLS, PILOT PROJECT (HR)
The e-Schools project aims to increase information and communication technology (ICT) use in primary and secondary education in Croatia by providing ICT equipment and educational tools for schools and teachers. This will enhance teachers' professional development, improve the quality of education and increase students' employability.
SHICC - Sustainable Housing for Inclusive and Cohesive Cities (BE - DE - FR - IE - NL - UK)
European funds are being used to showcase a community-focused model for land and affordable housing solutions in four cities across Belgium, France and the UK. Currently in development, these pilot sites will be studied to assess how sustainable and inclusive communities can be launched elsewhere in Europe. The project aims to make information and expertise accessible to people hoping to launch their own initiatives.
ENERGY@SCHOOL (AT - DE - HR - HU - IT - PL - SI)
Youth will play a crucial role in Europe’s transition to a carbon neutral continent. Energy@School trained pupils to become ‘junior energy guardians’. This awareness-raising approach resulted in significant energy efficiency improvements for the participating schools and can easily be rolled out in other regions. The project has shown that giving youth greater responsibility can be as effective as expensive renovation measures.
Time is now for change (LT - PL)
Working with and supporting at-risk youth is never an easy task. Doing so across borders is even more challenging. But thanks to the cooperation and coordinated programming facilitated by the EU-funded Time is Now for Change project, the Polish-Lithuanian cross-border region has succeeded in doing exactly that.
