Wastewater treatment project in Żywiec to improve sludge and wastewater handling

  • 29 December 2014

An upgraded sewerage infrastructure coupled with a new medium-temperature sludge treatment facility improves energy efficiency.

The construction of a new sewerage system of 1 186.1 km and improvements to the existing infrastructure significantly improves wastewater and sludge treatment in the town of Żywiec and the surrounding area.

Infrastructure improvements

The gravitational and pressure-based sewerage system includes branches extending to either property perimeters or to the first drain on a property. 20 km of drainage and 8.6 km of water mains have been replaced using cured-in-place pipe technology, meaning that existing pipework does not need to be dug up. This intends to reduce major water losses on the network. A new 197.1 km water ring main provides connections to property boundaries. The upgrades have improved service and reduced water loss for the 11 500 inhabitants using the water supply and for 80 000 sewerage network users.

Energy efficiency

Energy efficiency is guaranteed, thanks to low-carbon or reduced consumption solutions. Renewable energy and offsetting are also considered. To ensure this aim is met, all equipment has to be of the highest available electrical efficiency class. The number of pumps used is as low as possible, relying on gravity to move sewerage where appropriate.

Total investment and EU funding

Total investment for the project “Żywiec wastewater treatment – Phase II” is EUR 278 089 197. The EU’s Cohesion Fund is contributing EUR 181 500 641 through the "Infrastructure and Environment" operational programme for the 2007 to 2013 programming period, under the priority axis “Water and sewage management”.
