Tram network in Bratislava, Slovakia, to be extended to improve public transport

  • 27 October 2023

In the Petržalka borough of the Slovak capital, Bratislava, the second section of the Šafárik Square-Janíkov dvor tram line is being built with EU funding to improve public transport in the city. It will run from Bosákova Street to Janíkov dvor for 3.798 km.

In the Petržalka borough of the Slovak capital, Bratislava, the second section of the Šafárik Square-Janíkov dvor tram line is being built with EU funding to improve public transport in the city. It will run from Bosákova Street to Janíkov dvor for 3.798 km.

Its construction follows the building of the first section of the line, which runs from Šafárik Square to Bosákova Street and is 2.42 km in length.

The new section will include seven new stops: Chorvátske rameno, Gessayova, Zrkadlový háj, Stred, Veľký Draždiak, Lietavská, and Janíkov dvor. Each stop will have a minimum platform length of 65 m. Janíkov dvor will be the terminus and have three tracks to enable trams to turn around. The existing Bosákova tram stop will be converted into a combined bus and tram stop.

A traction substation and a tram maintenance workshop will be built at Janíkov dvor. A 22-kilovolt connection from the Ovsište substation will be installed along the entire line to supply power to these facilities.

Road adaptations

Roads and road junctions along the route of the line will be modified or rebuilt. Two bridges will be built to allow the line to cross the Chorvátske rameno canal. The project will make it possible to complete a bridge over Chorvátske rameno that will allow Kutlíková Street to have two lanes in each direction for its full length.

To ensure road safety, traffic lights will be set up at tramway level crossings and installed or modified at adjacent junctions. When the line is operational, trams will have priority over road transport.

A cycle path and footpaths will be built to provide access to the new stops. Trees will be planted in paved areas near stops and along the line, while lawns will be sown in areas where construction work has taken place.

Improved service

The line will connect the southern part of Petržalka with the Old Town of Bratislava, shortening journey times for people commuting to the city centre. By creating new stops and expanding the capacity of the tram network, the project will widen access to the tramways in Petržalka.

Improved quality of service should make the trams more attractive and increase the number of people using them. On working days, the line is expected to carry about 48 000 passengers a day in each direction.

The new section will be part of an integrated ecological public transport system and will reduce the negative environmental impacts of public transport, such as noise and air pollution. By encouraging people to switch from cars and buses to trams, it will also reduce traffic loads and the resulting wear and tear on road bridges.

Total investment and EU funding

Total investment for the project “New tram line in Petržalka, 2nd part – Bosákova Street-Janíkov dvor” is EUR 129 743 221, with the EU’s Cohesion Fund contributing EUR 73 144 756 through the “Integrated Infrastructure” Operational Programme for the 2014-2020 programming period. The investment falls under the priority “Public passenger transport”.
