Renovated Olomouc-Hejčín gymnasium improves education in East Czechia

  • 12 April 2021

The Olomouc-Hejčín gymnasium in East Czechia has improved its educational offering by renovating its facilities and premises with funds from the ERDF. Old equipment was replaced with modern material and classrooms and laboratories were renewed. The areas surrounding the campus building were made more attractive with new greenery, pavements, and seating areas.

"I dare say that few schools can offer students optional subjects in the pre-graduation and graduation year – in mathematics, chemistry, biology, physics, history and geography – in both Czech and English. This opens the way for our graduates to study abroad.”

Karel Goš, Olomouc-Hejčín gymnasium director

With over 1 000 attending students and 36 different classes, the Olomouc-Hejčín gymnasium is the largest grammar school in the Czech Republic. The improved learning environment is expected to further motivate students to continue their studies at university – both in-country and abroad – and, in the long run, increase their competitiveness in the labour market.

Interior update, equipment upgrade

The classrooms and laboratories have been furnished with new desks with drawers, bookcases stacked with textbooks and equipment such as interactive whiteboards, multifunctional printers, microscopes, computers, and projectors to support classes on every subject.

The upgraded learning environment brings benefits both for students and for the school’s teaching staff. By complementing their teaching with the use of the new equipment, teachers are improving their own professional qualifications.

A new, quality Wi-Fi network has been installed throughout the school to provide pupils and teachers with a fast and steady connection. The network better supports courses such as information technology and various after-school clubs.

Improving the outdoor areas

The area surrounding the campus undergone a facelift. New pavements that lead to all the buildings have been constructed. Both the school’s orchard and its adjacent park have been improved with new greenery and benches.

The new landscaping allows teachers to hold classes outdoors.

A bilingual grammar school

Founded in 1956, the Olomouc-Hejčín gymnasium offers four-year, six-year or eight-year study programmes at secondary education level. The six-year study programme is taught bilingually, in Czech and in English, to better prepare students for further studies abroad. The gymnasium has ongoing partnerships with grammar schools in Switzerland, France and Italy.

Total investment and EU funding

Total investment for the project “Modernization of classrooms, equipment and internal connectivity of the school - Gymnázium Olomouc – Hejčín” is EUR 1 018 964, with the EU’s European Regional Development Fund contributing EUR 866 120 through the “Integrated Regional Operational Programme” for the 2014-2020 programming period.
