R&D centre for the agroalimentary industry in Lleida

The European Commission has supported this project which sets out to establish a centre for research and development in the agroalimentary field. The ERDF has contributed €1.97 million, equivalent to 50% of the total cost of €3.94 million. The project is still progress.

Priority areas 

The project consisted of the construction and setting up of a research and development (R&D) centre for the agroalimentary industry in the city of Lleida. The centre is a joint venture between the University of Lleida (UdL) and the Institute of Agroalimentary Research and Technology (IRTA) and forms part of the IRTA’s network of work sites all over Catalonia, in collaboration with universities and other public and private organisms. 

The IRTA aims to contribute to the modernization, competitiveness and sustainable development of the agrarian, alimentary, agroforestry, water and fishing sectors, as well as in all other sectors related to the provision of healthy, high-quality food products.

Within this framework, the Lleida R&D centre focuses its research work on five main areas:

cereal crop improvement;irrigation technology;crop protection;genetics;animal enhancement;post-harvest.

For the period 2007-13, three additional R&D projects totalling €2.3 million have been approved in the county of Lleida:

the construction of the scientific and technological park building;the establishment of a network of innovative enterprises in Les Borges Blanques;transport infrastructure and communication networks.
