A 19.46 km section of Poland’s S61 express road, between the Podborze and Śniadowo junctions, is being built with EU funding. The investment is located in the Mazowieckie region.
Podborze-Śniadowo section of Poland’s S61 express road under construction
- 17 March 2023
Part of the core Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T), the new S61 section runs along a new alignment for its entire length, ending near the village of Tyszki-Nadbory, where a further stretch of the S61 begins.
The project also includes the construction of the new Podborze and Komorowo junctions, and reconstruction of short sections of the S8 express road and the DW627 regional road where they connect to the new road.
The new section of the S61 will be a dual carriageway (with 3.5 m-wide traffic lanes and a 2.5 m-wide emergency lane on each side), to handle projected traffic volumes. The road’s design speed will be 100 km/h.
New junctions
As part of the modifications to the S8, the Ostrów Mazowiecka North junction with the regional road DW627 is being removed, as is the existing Podborze junction with the 2654W and 2633W district roads. The new junctions Podborze and Komorowo will allow for safe traffic flow within the road network and access to adjacent areas via service routes.
Near the Podborze junction, a highway maintenance depot is being built, together with ancillary buildings. The roads will be fitted with a traffic management system, while safety infrastructure will include barriers, fences and anti-glare shields.
Bridges, viaducts and culverts will be built, and sections of road, buildings and other structures that obstruct the route of the new roads will be demolished.
Environmental protection
A rainwater drainage system and storm sewer will be built, along with pre-treatment devices for rainwater flowing from the roads into watercourses or reservoirs. Noise barriers and animal passages will be put in place, and roadside greenery will be planted.
Road lighting, electricity, gas, water, sewerage, telecommunications and railway infrastructure will be installed. In addition, footpaths, cycle paths and emergency access and exit routes will be developed.
An improved road network
The new sections of road will improve safety and shorten journey times between Warsaw and the Lithuanian border. Their construction is linked to other investments in key components of regional, inter-regional and international transport networks.
The project contributes to the creation of cohesive, high-capacity road infrastructure that connects major regional centres with the TEN-T network and, via express roads, with Warsaw, which is a hub of the core network. By further developing the TEN-T network, it helps to create a single multimodal European transport area.
Total investment and EU funding
Total investment for the project “Construction of the Podborze junction-Śniadowo junction section of the S61 express road” is EUR 224 576 302, with the EU’s Cohesion Fund contributing EUR 124 701 225 through the “Infrastructure and Environment” Operational Programme for the 2014-2020 programming period. The investment falls under the priority “Development of the TEN-T road network and multimodal transport”.
