New section of S7 expressway in Poland links Warsaw with Grójec

  • 16 August 2019

Construction of a 29.16 km section of the S7 expressway in Mazowieckie region, Poland, links with the S2/S79 Warsaw airport junction in the north and an existing bypass of the town of Grójec to the south. The new road runs for 23.64 km as a dual carriageway and 5.52 km as a three lane-motorway. The route promises to provide a fast and efficient connection to the airport, while improving the safety of road transport.

The project includes construction of six interchanges to ensure adequate connection with the existing road network. Two service areas are being built as part of the scheme.

Quicker journeys

In addition to improving links to the capital city’s airport, the road benefits local people by removing heavy transit traffic from built-up residential areas. It should reduce the number of accidents and casualties in the region. As with other sections of the S7, this stretch of road aids territorial cohesion by shortening journey times between Poland’s most important cities.

Strategic value

The project’s implementation contributes to achieving objectives laid down in the EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region relating to the provision of good transport conditions. It completes the basic and comprehensive Trans-European Transport (TEN-T) network in the region. The EU has committed billions of euros to develop the TEN-T network to make it easier for people and goods to travel within and between Member States.

This scheme is the ninth major project co-financed by the Cohesion Fund in the current programming period on the S7 corridor. The total value of the EU co-financing in these road investments is more than EUR 1.6 billion.

Total investment and EU funding

Total investment for the project “Construction of S7 express road, section Warszawa - Grójec” is EUR 346 969 401 with the EU’s Cohesion Fund contributing EUR 129 049 874 through the “Infrastructure and Environment” Operational Programme for the 2014-2020 programming period. The investment falls under the priority “Transport and energy networks”.
