New kindergarten increases access to pre-primary education in Bratislava, Slovakia

  • 29 May 2020

With the help of EU funding, a new kindergarten has increased the capacity of pre-primary education in the north-western part of Bratislava, and revitalised the area by renovating an old and abandoned building and its surrounding terrain.

This new kindergarten helps us extend the capacity of pre-primary education. Another positive impact of the project is the reconstruction of an abandoned building, which was in a complete state of decay. Lastly, the project also resulted in new jobs.

Martin Zaťovič, Dúbravka Mayor

The kindergarten is on Fedákova Street, in the Dúbravka district of Bratislava. It can accommodate 92 children between the ages of 3 and 6. The nursery is open on weekdays from 7.00 until 16.00. Thirteen new jobs were created, for teachers, general and administration staff, cleaning and kitchen personnel.

Improving quality of life

The former nursery building in Fedákova Street has undergone a complete makeover. The building had been abandoned for some time and was in total decay. With the help of EU funds, new water supply and electricity lines were installed, and the entire building received a new coat of paint inside and outside. In the adjacent garden, a brand new playground was constructed, with sandboxes, seesaws, spring riders and swing sets for the children to enjoy.

The opening of the new kindergarten is part of the country’s effort to improve the quality of life for residents. The Fedákova kindergarten joins 11 existing facilities that offer day care services in the Dúbravka district. This provides children with access to pre-primary education to ensure they can transition smoothly to higher levels of schooling.

Answering a need

The addition of nearly 100 new places for children addresses a crucial demand for quality pre-primary education in the municipality. Before the project, there were between 150 and 170 children who could not be accommodated in day care.

The kindergarten is helping residents with children reconcile work and family life, supporting mothers in their return to the labour market after maternity leave. Offering parents the possibility of having their children looked after during working hours allows them to seek employment and improve the financial situation of their family and, consequently, the quality of their lives.

Total investment and EU funding

Total investment for the project “Reconstruction of kindergarten Fedákova” is EUR 548 162, with the EU’s European Regional Development Fund contributing EUR 274 081 through the “Integrated Regional Operational Programme Slovakia” Operational Programme for the 2014-2020 programming period. The investment falls under the priority “Easier access to effective and quality public services”.
