A complex project to modernise the Kaponiera roundabout in Poznań’s busy city centre aims to improve access to public transport, particularly for people with reduced mobility. Bus and tram infrastructures receive a major overhaul under the scheme, which also provides for the reconstruction of key roads and supporting structures.

The project has been designed to integrate bus, tram and fast tram services more efficiently at the roundabout. The overall goal is to make public transport more attractive in Poznań and so increase passenger share compared to car use. In fact, the additional number of passengers served by the upgraded urban transport system is expected to be about 5 740 533 people/year in 2016.
Major works
The project’s essential works include:
A 0.6 km upgrade of the tram and trolley-bus network;Reconstruction of underground passageways within level one of the roundabout, including the installation of elevators and escalators which can be accessed by disabled people;Adaptation of tram stops so they can better cater to disabled people;Reconstruction of the road system;Installation of video monitoring equipment to improve passenger safety; andConstruction of common tram and bus stops.The project also covers the demolition and reconstruction of the western and eastern flyovers which are located at University Bridge along Saint Martin Street. In addition, heating, sanitary, electricity and telecommunications systems are being redeveloped.
Upon completion of the project, the city of Poznań will continue to own the Kaponiera roundabout hub. The Municipal Roads Department and Municipal Transport Department based in Poznań will manage and maintain the infrastructure.
Total investment and EU funding
Total investment for the project “Reconstruction of Roundabout Kaponiera” is EUR 27 057 118, of which the EU’s Cohesion Fund is contributing EUR 21 645 694 from the Operational Programme “Infrastructure and Environment” for the 2007 to 2013 programming period. Work falls under the priority “Environment Friendly Transport”.
