Energy systems and leisure facilities improved at Tudor Vladimirescu campus

  • 04 February 2016

Improvements to the electrical and heating systems, leisure facilities and catering facilities in the canteen at Gheorghe Asachi Technical University's Tudor Vladimirescu campus in Iasi represent an important contribution to social inclusion, jobs, education and training in north eastern Romania. The installation of two combined heat and power (CHP) systems should improve energy efficiency in the medium and long term, while the upgrade of two sports grounds and the refurbishment of the canteen give students access to high-quality leisure facilities and good, reasonably-priced food.

It's important that Tudor Vladimirescu campus, home to 8 500 students, has been restored. It was not easy, but the objectives of increased comfort and lower tariffs for student accommodation have been achieved.

Ion Giurma, Rector of Gheorghe Asachi Technical University

Gheorghe Asachi Technical University is attended by around 20 % of students in the North-East region, and 82.5 % of students at the university benefit from the Tudor Vladimirescu campus facilities. The campus dormitories are 30-40 years old and had never previously been renovated; the sports grounds at the site were dilapidated and the canteen lacked equipment.

The project thus took an integrated approach, focusing on both accommodation and related student services. The new CHP generation systems are highly automated, and easy to monitor and control, thereby cutting energy losses. The renovated heating supply network is 1 983 m in length and includes 16 new heating modules.

Catering services at reasonable prices

The redesign and refurbishment of the canteen gives some 500 students a day access to catering services at reasonable prices. It is particularly aimed at students with limited financial resources, something that was previously only provided for by private companies. The modernised sports grounds, with a surface of 1 406.6 m2 and 990 m2 respectively, are able to host a range of sporting activities and events.

A total of 5 070 students are using the upgraded facilities, and 12 dormitories have been renovated within this project. The energy efficiency achieved by the project has contributed to reducing the costs of student accommodation by almost 40 %.

Gheorghe Asachi Technical University aims to increase accommodation provision by redesigning and renovating a further six dormitories, which may be done as part of a future project.
