Investment to restore historic church murals and create an exhibition space in a reconstructed town hall is helping to preserve the works of Polish painter Józef Mehoffer.
Turek – Mehoffer city: Preserving cultural heritage to boost tourism
- 26 November 2015
The project contributed to the preservation of local cultural heritage associated with the life and work of Józef Mehoffer and most importantly allowed us to create a product of culture.
The town of Turek in central Poland is known for its Józef Mehoffer heritage, which remains a strong element for the culture and tourism in the region.
The church of Jesus Holiest Heart in Turek is famous for the stained glass and mural paintings designed by Józef Mehoffer, who was a painter and decorative artist, and one of the most revered Polish artists of his time.
The investment supported the restoration of Mehoffer’s historic murals in the neo-gothic church. In addition, it involved the reconstruction of the town hall for the purpose of exhibiting Mehoffer’s works as well as documents related to the life of the artist.
Conservation of local heritage
Reconstruction resulted in the creation of new spaces for cultural activities which considerably broaden the museum’s offer. The total surface occupied by the town hall has been extended to 1 330 m2 from 247 m2 and the exhibition area has more than doubled in size, from 167 m2 to 435 m2.
The implementation of the project contributed significantly to the conservation of local heritage related to Mehoffer’s life and works, and reinforced the growth of culture in the life of the town and its inhabitants, as well as improving tourism in the region.
