Investment in new section of A2 motorway near Warsaw, Poland

  • 26 July 2019

Poland’s capital is expected to be relieved of some of its transit traffic thanks to the construction of a 14.8 km stretch of the A2 motorway. The new section of the motorway links Warsaw Southern bypass from Lubelska junction with an existing stretch of the A2, near the town of Mińsk Mazowiecki. A total of 14.4 km of the new road is dual carriageway while 0.4 km has three lanes in each direction. The dual carriageway section has a reserve, allowing it to be expanded to three lanes, if required.

The project involves construction of a new road interchange – called Konik – with the existing national road No. 2 and development of two new service areas in Ostrów-Kania. Additional work includes installation of noise barriers and animal passes, which will reduce the negative impact of road traffic on the environment. Interchanges are being built to link the A2 with national and local roads. Plus, the inclusion of modern road safety equipment increases motorists’ safety.

Work on the A2 complements another EU-supported project which is for the construction of the S2 express road between the Puławska and Lubelska junctions. Both schemes are continuations of investments on the Warsaw Southern bypass.

Major benefits

Relieving Warsaw city centre of transit traffic helps improve the quality of life for the city’s residents. Other benefits of building the A2 include faster, safer and better connections to other parts of Poland and Europe. Reducing travel times between major Polish cities helps build the country’s social, economic and territorial cohesion. Roads like the A2, with their modern design and surfaces, improve the comfort and smoothness of driving while reducing accidents.

European connections

Implementation of this project contributes to meeting objectives laid down in the EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region for the development of good transport connections. The A2 forms part of the EU’s Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) on the international route E30 Cork – Utrecht – Berlin – Poznan – Warsaw – Brest – Minsk – Moscow – Omsk. The EU is investing billions of euros in the TEN-T initiative to make it easier for people and goods to move in and between Member States.

Total investment and EU funding

Total investment for the project “Construction of A2 motorway, section Warszawa (Lubelska junction) - Mińsk Mazowiecki” is EUR 197 519 421, with the EU’s Cohesion Fund contributing EUR 78 406 900 through the “Infrastructure and Environment” Operational Programme for the 2014-2020 programming period. The investment falls under the priority 3 “Development of the TEN-T road network and multimodal transport” (within thematic objective “Transport and energy networks”).
